Revision of ISO 9001 announced for 2026
In summer 2023, the ISO/TC 176 SC2 technical committee decided to revise ISO 9001:2015. Publication of the revised standard was originally planned for the end of 2025. However, according to current information, completion is likely to be delayed until autumn 2026.
The revision aims to adapt the standard to current developments. Planned focal points include
- Sustainability and climate change: Integration of requirements for the consideration of ecological aspects in quality management.
- Ethics and integrity: Greater emphasis on ethical principles and integrity in organisations.
- Quality culture: Promotion of a corporate culture that places quality at the centre.
- Dealing with opportunities and risks: Further development of the risk-based approach to proactively identify and utilise opportunities and mitigate risks.
These adjustments are intended to ensure that ISO 9001 fulfils current requirements and supports companies in continuously improving their processes.
TÜV Saarland Certification GmbH recommends that companies follow the developments closely and start planning the implementation of the new requirements at an early stage. Our experts are available to provide you with advice and assistance to inform you about the effects of the revision for certified customers.
ISO 9001 – The international standard for quality management
The international standard ISO 9001 defines the requirements for a quality management system (QMS) that companies must implement in order to fulfil the expectations of internal and external stakeholders. ISO 9001 is based on seven principles of quality management (source: DIN EN ISO 9000):
- Customer focus and sustainable success
- Management and leadership
- Commitment of individuals
- Process-orientated approach
- Continuous improvement
- Fact-based decision-making
- Relationship management
The current DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 has a superordinate structure called “High Level Structure” (HLS) and is therefore compatible with other ISO standards for management systems (such as ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 50001, ISO 45001, ISO 14001). In addition, DIN EN ISO 9001 is characterised by economical, market-oriented, sustainable and user-friendly operating procedures.
One of the key features of ISO 9001 is the risk-based approach, which identifies opportunities and potential hazards, derives suitable measures and evaluates their effectiveness. This ensures that the quality management system and the accompanying processes in your company achieve the desired results.
The current, German-language version of DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 is available from DIN Media Verlag.
How does ISO 9001 certification work?
When companies obtain ISO 9001 certification, they go through a multi-stage certification process. If a certified management system is already in place, the process can be shortened.
- application and pre-audit (optional)
Information meeting (by telephone or in person), application for certification, project meeting. Optionally, a pre-audit can be carried out to determine readiness for certification.
- certification on site
The actual certification audit takes place in two stages: In stage 1 (system analysis), we analyse your management system on site and evaluate it. In the second stage (system audit), the audit takes place on site. Among other things, our auditors assess whether your management system complies with standards and identify potential for improvement. The audit results are presented at a final meeting. If necessary, action plans are agreed.
- audit report and evaluation
Documentation of the audit and evaluation of the management system
- certificate and seal
After successfully completing certification, you will receive your certificate and can use the TÜV Saarland certification mark (with a maximum term of three years)
- surveillance audits
After successful certification, we carry out an annual surveillance audit to ensure that your company continues to fulfil all the important criteria of ISO 9001. This provides expert support for the continuous improvement of your health and safety management system.
- recertification
An ISO 9001 certificate is valid for three years. Recertification takes place in good time before the certificate expires in order to ensure continued fulfilment of the standard requirements. A new certificate is issued upon fulfilment.
